Got sick...

yea, two days before san marcos I wake up in the middle of the night with a sore throat and a nasty runny nose... Today was a major drag on the bike, no power and feeling like I could lie down on the side of the road and crash at any time. I think I'm still going to make an appearance at san marcos tomorrow (providing I don't feel worse in the morning) and will probably be relegated to pack fotter...

speeking of fotter, anyone heard about the possibility of Rose Bowl being canceled? I guess the cyclists are to blame for all the problems with traffic, runners getting hit, and such... It sounds like the city council is trying to enact a law where all cyclists would have to ride no more than two a breast, meaning no more pack of 100+ riders jamming around the Rosebowl. Personally, I think getting rid of the ride all together is too simple a solution and not real fair to cyclists. The real problem is that there is a lot going on in one central area at the same time... There are runners, walkers, rollerbladers, golfers, people trying to park for soccer practice, and the cyclists... anytime you have that many things going on all at once, one or two are going to clash with each other. The city council should be trying to figure out a way in which everything can co-exist. I read a good idea on socalcycling.com, one guy in the forum suggested making the road around the Rose Bowl one direction... like a massive roundabout... why not? Another came from a friend back east, He does a local ride where riders pay a nominal $5.00 to participate and it is donated to the local police department. In return the police provide an escort, and the riders get a warm fuzzy inside for supporting the community... In all honesty, I think most local cyclists (that Ive encountered) are to cheap to pay to do a training ride and probably don't care about supporting the local community (based on how much we pay into taxes and how they are spent here in California, I cant blame anyone for not wanting to toss money at any city or government institution)... That is just my personal opinion though... I think that many of the riders in the peleton could clean their manners up a bit though. We have our fair share of hot shots and hot heads at that ride (so does any sport though aka running, rollerblading, soccer, etc...). I never go to that ride without my I-Pod. I get tired of hearing grown men using profanity and making stupid and risky moves, aren't elders supposed to set examples? The point is, all it takes is one oblivious or cocky (no shortage of those) cyclist making a move hes not capable of making and one runner or rollerblader with the same attitude to result in a accident... The focus should be to try to work out a way in which everyone gets what they want, that means (as cyclists) we need to use our heads and not dice into the running lane or opposite lane of traffic to move up a few spaces, its a training ride... there is NO money... We need to let someone in the peleton when they are trying to get out of a running lane or traffic lane, don't curse because you think they cut you off... its not personal, so chill... plus their are young impressionable kids around, don't give them the wrong impression of cyclists at that young of an age. You want to see the sport grow, do more than just talk about it... contribute, demonstrate some class and self control... First and foremost, this is supposed to be fun. Its just no fun when everyone is yelling at each other, so instead of yelling at each other offer some words of encouragement... just some ideas...
