1.So Tim, how would you sum up your first year experience doing the Furnace Creek 508? T.G: Charmed, Lucky, tempted to do it again to experience a horrific event. The whole thing went well, it was almost like a trick to get you to do it again.
2.You're going to do it again? T.G: Yea, after a few good nights of sleep I'm ready to do it again, not solo though! The key is putting together the right group of riders, not just strength but personality, a good tight knit group of guys who will stay positive when things get ugly, which they will.
3.Where do you think most of the other 4 man teams lost time? Since you have to follow your rider at night it would seem tough to be ready for the exchanges at the time stations. T.G: Sigh, I think it comes down to detail, there's not one specific thing that bites you, it's 5 minutes here and there. Next thing you know, you've lost 40 minutes.
4. Did you stop alot during the night, for those nature breaks? or did you only stop when your rider stopped? T.G: rider stopped? it's a race... you hold it or you get creative.
5. Did you get creative? yes, we got creative... Don't drink out of the Subaru bottle!
6. I see, I know some good bottle stories but I'll save those for another time... How did the team fair the second day? T.G: The team faired well, kept their cool and grinded it out. 7.How did you feel on your last stage? I found that dark place you've been telling me about.
8. Did that Dark Place have a Starbucks? That Dark place has no amenities, and I mean NONE!
9. I understand, you thought you were getting caught by a chasing 4 man team on the last leg, how did you feel when you saw their support vehicle pass you? T.G: My heart was in my throat.
10: Why was that? T.G: After almost 29hrs, I did not want to let down the team by gagging it away in the last 2 miles.
11. How did it feel to come out with a team of rookies and win your age group and take 2nd in the overall 4 man team? T.G: Like a cat Burglar. Knowing guys like Wolverine and Red Rooster and knowing how tough the conditions can be during this race, I feel we had great fortune for a first experience.
12. So what was your coveted post race meal? T.G: Chimichangas and Foster Freeze, yum yum.
13. Oh yes, the foster Freeze was awesome, well I will let you go to work, thanks for the interview and wish you best in the solo event next year. T.G: yea, I’m looking forward to the solo 20-40k’s all next year. Being more into the TT scene, I still look at the20 20k’s and the 6 40k’s I did last year and they still don’t add up to the 508.
